Regular Membership

Companies engaged in asphalt manufacture or resale in the U.S. that sell sufficient quantities of asphalt to reach the minimum assessment (established by the AI Board of Directors) in one or more of the following categories:

  • Companies that manufacture liquid asphalt from crude petroleum for any use.
  • Companies with asphalt storage and handling facilities that market or resell liquid asphalt to unrelated third party companies. This includes resellers who take title to the liquid prior to resale.
  • Associate Members who do not sell sufficient quantities of asphalt to meet the minimum assessment for regular members, but have elected to pay the minimum assessment.

Associate Membership

Entities that meet all qualifications for regular membership but sell insufficient quantities of asphalt to reach the minimum assessment established for regular members.

Canadian Membership

Companies that qualify for regular or associate membership but whose principal asphalt sales and/or usage are located in Canada.

International Membership

Companies that qualify for regular or associate membership but whose principal asphalt sales and/or usage is located outside the U.S. and Canada.

Global Membership

Companies that produce asphalt from crude petroleum in multiple countries including the U.S for any and all uses.

Commercial Members

Companies engaged in the asphalt business that purchase liquid asphalt in bulk quantities for application use or for the manufacture of end-use asphalt products. Companies must meet all requirements in one of the following areas:

Commercial Paving:

  • Have permanent liquid asphalt storage facilities in North America, with a minimum capacity of 250,000 barrels.
  • Own and operate the storage facility.
  • Do not resell liquid asphalt to unrelated third party companies.

Commercial Non-Paving:

  • Have permanent liquid asphalt storage facilities in North America.
  • Purchase at least 30,000 ton of liquid asphalt annually in North America.
  • Do not resell liquid asphalt to unrelated third party companies.
  • HMA paving companies are not eligible for this designation. Asphalt roofing shingles and asphalt emulsions for pipe-coatings are considered end-use products.

Affiliate Members

  • Asphalt sales agents without asphalt assets or facilities who do not take title to the liquid prior to resale.
  • Any company engaged in the asphalt business, working specifically with asphalt related raw material or asphalt additives and whose principal activity in the asphalt business meets one or more of the following categories:
    1. Manufacturers or suppliers of equipment for the manufacture, storage, transport, or testing of liquid asphalt.
    2. Additive manufacturers or suppliers.
    3. Transporters.
    4. Commercial testing laboratories.
    5. Terminal operators that provide fee-based terminal services.
  • Companies doing business outside of the U.S. who meet one or more of the eligibility requirements for Affiliate membership.
