Mix Design Technology Certification
(21 PDHs)
A 3.5 day course - $995 - Lexington, KY
(Includes certification exam, a copy of AI's MS-2 Mix Design and SP-2 Superpave Manuals and IS-210 Procedures to Improve the Precision of HMA Volumetric Calculations)
January 11-14, 2011 - Register online
Your asphalt mixture design is a crucial step to a high quality asphalt pavement. Improve your designs with a thorough understanding of material properties and mixture design. By expanding your knowledge you can maximize the performance of aggregate and asphalt materials with sophisticated construction practices.
Learn about asphalt and aggregate material selection and how each component affects mixture properties. Gain an understanding of HMA properties and the background facts necessary to make critical decision in the lab and on the construction project. Upgrade your skills with the Superpave mix design methods using the gyratory compactor, as well as the utilization of RAP in hot-mix asphalt. Other mix design methods such as Marshall utilize the same materials properties and volumetric principles taught in this class. SMA, OGFC and Warm Mix are also discussed in this course.
Classroom activities include aggregate selection and blending, volumetric calculations, and optimum mixture selection. You will experience hands-on laboratory activities and demonstration for aggregate testing, mixing compaction and sample specific gravity (Gmb and Gmm).
Software
This course will include a demonstration of the premier tool available for selecting the proper PG binder, LTPPBind. Also, the Asphalt Institute Mix Design Program (SW-2), will be demonstrated and made available at a reduced price for those attending the course. The program offers four modules that cover Trial Blending and Mixture Design analysis for both Superpave and Marshall mix design procedures.
Optional Certification Testing
Friday is reserved for an optional certification exam. The course participants' knowledge will be challenged with the exam typically taking from two to three hours on average. Several Specifying Agencies have accepted the Asphalt Institute Mix Design Technology Certification, either in whole or in part, as meeting the requirements for certification in their state. Prospective participants should verify the applicability of this certification with their local agency.
Who Should Attend
This course has been developed to meet the needs of those actively involved in mixture design, material specifications and field management of asphalt mixtures. State and local transportation agencies, consultants and contractors who are involved in HMA materials and design will benefit from this course.
