Under the general guidance and supervision of the Director of Engineering, this position leads the expansion of Asphalt Institute (AI) programs related to asphalt binder industry sustainability efforts. By working in a collaborative environment, assists in efforts to update and enhance our Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) models into more robust Life Cycle Inventories (LCI) and potential Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) program. Program focus includes, but is not limited to, petroleum-based asphalt binders, binder additives and modifiers. Must be able to articulate the value of petroleum-based asphalt binders in achieving customer sustainability objectives, including greenhouse gas emission reduction goals and green rating certification systems (e.g., LEED, GreenGlobes).
Must possess a passion and knowledge regarding sustainability, quickly develop an understanding of pavement and roofing sustainability technical areas, have ability to advocate for sustainability on behalf of the industry both internally and externally, and bring new pavement sustainability solutions to the area of asphalt binders.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Leads AI’s LCA program for petroleum-based asphalt binders, including binders with additives and modifiers. Manages LCA program updates every 5 years by working with industry members, LCA consultants, and other professionals.
- Coordinates AI’s sustainability efforts with those of industry partners such as National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA), Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA), Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and state transportation agencies.
- Assesses areas where AI’s LCA program could be enhanced, perhaps leading to an EPD program for binders. If needed, develops such a plan, and promotes to AI members.
- Understands and relates AI priorities with regards to quality use of petroleum-based asphalt binders, additives, and modifiers in a sustainability environment. Guides AI’s policies with regards to circularity and resource use.
- Helps draft request for proposals (RFP) and evaluate sustainability research contract progress funded through the Asphalt Institute Foundation.
- Promotes AI sustainability initiatives on behalf of its members.
- Works closely with the FHWA Sustainable Pavement Program, attends and participates in FHWA’s Sustainable Pavements Technical Working Group (SPTWG) meetings and aligns AI’s programs in a supporting manner.
- Similarly, promotes the integration of AI LCA programs and LCI databases into asphalt pavement EPD programs such as NAPA’s Emerald Eco-Label, FHWA’s LCAPave and the Federal LCA Commons.
- Participates in industry technical and research groups focused on pavement sustainability, such TRB and ASTM committees, and asphalt roofing sustainability.
- Contributes to pavement sustainability technical areas being researched and debated between the asphalt and concrete pavement industries. These areas include impact of pavement type on urban heat island (reflectivity), pavement noise, pavement resiliency, and rolling resistance for fuel efficiency (pavement vehicle interaction).
- Integrate industry environmental efforts with Life Cycle Cost Analysis to ensure accurate accounting of pavement longevity and costs into carbon reduction measures.
- Writes and contributes to articles for AI publications in all media forms.

KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in applied sciences, engineering, or similar field of professional study required.
- Five or more years of experience in sustainable engineering practices required.
- Knowledge of ISO standards related to EPDs, carbon footprinting, and LCA.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills. Proficient and comfortable in delivering presentations to wide variety of audiences in a public setting.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Previous experience in energy modeling or performing/managing Life Cycle Assessments to analyze carbon impacts is preferred.
- Being USGBC LEED Accredited Professional (AP) Certified is a plus, as well as familiarity of OpenLCA.
- Must maintain a valid U.S. driver’s license.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS and CONDITIONS
Position has no unusual physical demands; however, it may require commercial airline and automobile travel principally within the U.S. and Canada. Travel is expected to be 15% of the time or less. International travel outside of North America is not expected.
