Roofing Asphalt Proficiency Sample Program
The Roofing Asphalt PSP is an annual testing program coordinated by Asphalt Institute to evaluate laboratory performance and promote consistency in roofing asphalt testing.
Each participating laboratory will receive two sample containers, along with detailed testing and reporting instructions. Participants may perform and report results for several common roofing asphalt tests, including:
- Softening Point: ASTM D36 (Ring & Ball Apparatus) or ASTM D3461 (Mettler Cup-and-Ball Method)
- Flash Point: ASTM D92, Flash and Fire Points by Cleveland Open Cup
- Penetration: ASTM D5, Penetration of Bituminous Materials at 0°C, 25°C, and 46°C (32°F, 77°F, and 115°F)
- Ductility: ASTM D113, Ductility of Bituminous Materials at 25°C (77°F)
- Rotational Viscosity: ASTM D4402, Viscosity Determination of Asphalt at Elevated Temperatures Using a Rotational Viscometer (204°C / 400°F)
- Stain Index: ASTM D2746, Staining Tendency of Asphalt
- Rheological Testing: ASTM D7175, Dynamic Shear Rheometer (DSR) at high and intermediate temperatures
Optional rheological tests are also included. These DSR-based procedures include:
- High temperature characterization: analogous to the Softening Point test
- Single-point Intermediate temperature characterization: analogous to the Penetration test at 25°C (77°F)
- Multi-point intermediate temperature characterization: analysis of key high-stiffness rheological parameters.
A draft test procedure for the optional rheological tests will be supplied with the samples.
While we encourage laboratories to submit as much data as possible to ensure a robust analysis of repeatability and reproducibility, we understand that not all participants will perform every test.
Participants will have approximately eight weeks after receiving the samples to complete testing and submit results to Asphalt Institute. Following the submission deadline, all data will be analyzed, and each participant will receive a summary report showing their individual laboratory results and a comparison with other participating labs.
