The Asphalt Institute (AI) is seeking to fill a full-time Research Engineer position: (1) to support research and testing activities in its Mixtures and Performance Testing Lab; and (2) to assist and support research program management activities of the Asphalt Institute Foundation (AIF). This position reports to AI’s Director of Research and Laboratory Services and works with staff, and industry alike to meet the research and testing components of the AI and AIF missions.

Lexington, Kentucky. Close coordination with AI’s Director of Research and Laboratory Services and other Asphalt Institute staff is required.


This position develops/acquires research programs and conducts research as contracted by private and public organizations. The position also assists the Director of Research and Laboratory Services in managing research programs for the AIF. Other key duties include:

  • assisting with lab training and certification programs, on- and off-site;
  • conducting internal research on timely issues of concern to AI and its Member Companies;
  • providing technical support to Members and other AI departments as needed;
  • supervising Asphalt Mixture and Performance Testing Laboratory Technicians. This includes, but is not limited to, oversight on all testing and research projects, coordination and delegation of tasks, and completing performance evaluations.


Must possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, a current Professional Engineer (PE) license, and a minimum of five (5) years of post-graduate experience in asphalt technology. Knowledge of asphalt paving material composition, design and construction practices, pavement behavior and evaluation, asphalt materials laboratory testing procedures and equipment, and statistical analysis techniques – including statistical design of experiments – is expected. Must have demonstrated skills to successfully develop, initiate, and complete research projects and programs. Active membership in one or more related professional organizations is desirable. Excellent interpersonal, written, oral communication and organizational skills required. Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.


The position may require commercial airline and automobile travel principally within the U.S. and Canada. Travel is expected to be 25% of the time or less. International travel outside of North America is not expected.


Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. Excellent benefits package including medical and 401K. Moving allowance negotiable.
