Mike Anderson has worked for the Asphalt Institute in Lexington, Kentucky since 1991, starting as a Staff Engineer and currently serving as the VP of Research and Laboratory Services. Mike started his career in the asphalt industry in 1987 with the Kentucky Department of Highways, Division of Materials as asphalt mix design engineer and continuing as a laboratory manager and quality control engineer for H.G. Mays Corporation before joining AI.

In his career at the Asphalt Institute, Mike has been fortunate to have been actively involved with several national research projects including the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) and several SHRP implementation projects as well as seven NCHRP (National Cooperative Highway Research Program) projects involving asphalt material testing and analysis.

He is a member of a several professional organizations including the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists (AAPT), International Society for Asphalt Pavements (ISAP), and Canadian Technical Asphalt Association (CTAA. Mike served AAPT as President in 2008-09 and, since 2013, has served as its Executive Director.

Mike has been an author or co-author of numerous published peer-reviewed technical papers, manuals, and reports, and is a registered professional engineer in Kentucky. In 2023 he became recognized as a Certified Association Executive (CAE).

  • Remembering Gary Irvine

    1956-2025 Gary Irvine came to the Asphalt Institute in 1994 after moving his young family from Southern California to a little town in Shelby County, Kentucky between Frankfort and Louisville. To my understanding he made that cross-country move pretty much on faith.
