L. C. Krchma

C. Krchma’s education as a physical chemist and early experience and investigations in the chemical and physical properties of asphalts, led him to the study of asphalt mixture characteristics and pavement performance. He was an early proponent of evaluating pavement serviceability and performance, especially in light of the many variables and factors which can affect pavement service life, and he retained an interest in this subject throughout his career.

Throughout his career, he exerted industry leadership with contributions to briquetting, weathering, specifications and test development and was also a leader and renowned expert in the production, application and technology of industrial asphalts. He authored numerous technical reports on asphalt and asphalt paving technology which appear in proceedings of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists. He is a past president of AAPT, and he has written technical papers appearing in publications of the American Society for Testing and Materials, Transportation Research Board, Institute for Briquetting and Agglomeration, and the American Chemical Society.

Mr. Krchma was a contributing author to the authoritative reference book titled “BITUMINOUS MATERIALS: Asphalts, Tars and Pitches.”  He was also the first chief technical representative of the asphalt industry on the Committee on Asphalt and Health of the American Petroleum Institute which was formed to study environmental and ecological effects of asphalt materials and mixtures.
