Dr. Thomas W. Kennedy

Dr. Kennedy retired as Engineering Foundation Professor at The University of Texas at Austin. His career has been largely devoted to asphalt and pavement research and education. After completing his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois, Dr. Kennedy joined the faculty at The University of Texas at Austin in 1965. His research interests included improved construction procedures and specifications, materials characterization, modifiers for asphalt binders and mixtures, and soil stabilization.

Over his career, he supervised over $15 million in research and authored over four hundred papers and technical reports. Of particular importance, Dr. Kennedy served as the Principal Investigator for the Management and Product Development contract for the asphalt research studies carried out by the Strategic Highway Research Program. In this role, he managed the development of the products that now comprise the Superpave system.

Dr. Kennedy is recognized as an Honorary Member of the Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists, and served as the Association’s President. Many of his students have gone on to play important roles in the Asphalt Institute and in the asphalt industry.
