Roll of Honor - Dr. David R. Jones, IV

Dr. David R. Jones

David R. Jones IV started his asphalt career with Owens Corning in 1985 as the supervisor of the Asphalt Technology Laboratory.  In 1989, Dave made a significant career decision by joining the Asphalt Research Team at the University of Texas at Austin as a research chemist working on the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP).  As part of the SHRP Asphalt Research management team, Dave was responsible for three major contracts.  He proposed a chemical model to explain the viscoelastic behavior of asphalt.  He also theorized the importance of asphalt materials.  He made numerous presentations on the significant findings and implementation activities of the asphalt program.  He was a key part of the team responsible for the Performance Graded (PG) Asphalt Binder Specification.

Following SHRP, Dave spent several years working with the system that he helped create as Vice President of PRI Asphalt Technologies.  In 1988, Dave returned to Owens Corning Trumbull Asphalt as a program leader in Science & Technology.  He focused on the development of modified asphalt products, the TruPave paving mat, and in the development of asphalt based adhesives.

In 2002, he was one of the only three industry representatives invited to a Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Tour of five European countries to assess the construction practices and warranty provisions used for asphalt pavement.

Dave was chairman of the Roofing Technical Advisory Committee (RTAC) from 2002 to 2007.  He was a member of many industry committees, including the Transportation Research Board, Association of Asphalt Paving Technologists, Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturer’s Association, International Slurry Surfacing Association, and the American Society for Testing and Materials.  Dave also served on the FHWA’s Asphalt Binder Expert Task Group.  He held 24 asphalt related patents or patent application, a testament to his innovative mind.
