Description

The construction of high quality, long-lasting asphalt pavements begins with their design. Industry experts Tim Murphy, P.E., Murphy Pavement Technology, and Dave Johnson, P.E., Asphalt Institute Senior Regional Engineer, bring their combined 60+ years of experience in this arena to a virtual four-day Idaho Asphalt Mix Design Certification Course. Instruction will begin at 8:30 and end at 4:30, Mountain Time. Morning, afternoon, and lunch breaks will occur. 26 Professional Development Hours are offered to attendees.

Tim and Dave have designed this class to emphasize Idaho specifications for asphalt pavements.

This training provides advanced technicians, designers, and engineers responsible for mix designs with a thorough understanding of the properties of the materials which compose asphalt mixtures, as well as the physical and mathematical processes involved in producing a successful asphalt mixture design. Students will receive training in the entire range of activities related to the design of asphalt mixtures. Successfully passing the online certification test meets the training component requirement for mix design technicians and engineers in the state of Idaho as established by the Idaho Transportation Department.

For detailed, hands-on laboratory training on basic aggregate and asphalt mixture testing for both experienced and inexperienced technicians, we recommend Asphalt Institute’s Basic Mixture Technician Training course.  Unlike this course, it focuses on giving the students a thorough understanding of each test and related processes, while instructing students on the procedures and techniques which will maximize testing accuracy and repeatability.

The specific agenda for the course is as follows:

General Information

  • Start time: 8:30 Mountain Time
  • Lunch Break: 30-minute around noon
  • Ending time: 4:30 Mountain Time
  • One 15-minute break in the morning and afternoon

Topics

  • Specifications emphasizing Idaho requirements
  • Aggregates and binder selection
  • Material properties
  • Development of trial blends and batching
  • Volumetric calculations and analysis
