On-Site Classroom/Lab Training Courses

Rheobit™ (Rheology of Bituminous Materials) (32 PDHs)

Program Dates: September 29-October 3, 2014

Specifications in the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere in the world are increasingly dependent upon basic principles of rheology and the application of advanced computer techniques. An understanding of these principles is essential for those developing and applying specifications as well as developers and producers of new and enhanced binders, and researchers in academia and industry. The purpose of the Rheobit workshop is to introduce the basic principles of rheology as they apply to asphalt binders, introduce measurement principles and analytical concepts, and provide a hands-on experience in the laboratory that is closely integrated with the classroom work. This highly-interactive course is intended for engineers and scientists experienced with asphalt binders, but seeking fundamental knowledge that is not available elsewhere.

Airport Pavement Technical Workshop

Program Dates: November 4-6, 2014

The goal of this workshop is to provide up-to-date information for those designing, constructing, and managing asphalt airport pavements. This will include a review of current specifications, advisory circulars, and detailed descriptions of materials, as well as pavement design, construction, and preservation practices for airports.

Basic Binder Technician Training - Asphalt Institute Headquarters, Lexington, Kentucky.

Program Dates: TBA

If you are responsible for asphalt testing, materials approval, specification and quality control, this course is for you. Learn the test procedures, calculations and criteria involved with grading asphalt binders in the Performance-Graded (PG) asphalt binder specification (AASHTO M320). Develop and hone your skills during 20 hours of intensive hands-on labs including sample preparation and testing using the rotational viscometer, COC flashpoint tester, dynamic shear and bending beam rheometers, direct tension tester and “PG plus” tests. Evaluate your knowledge with the review exam during the last half day. Leave this course with the ability to perform your job with newfound confidence and valuable insight into your future NBTC certification.

Additional courses scheduled by request

Basic Mixture Technician Training - Asphalt Institute Headquarters, Lexington, Kentucky.

Program Dates: TBA

This course will educate and instruct inexperienced and experienced technicians on the methods and procedures for testing asphalt mixtures and aggregates. Students will be instructed on how to perform tests according to AASHTO and ASTM standards specific for Superpave Mix Design.  Our trainers will explain and demonstrate tests while students will be guided and enabled in the processes of aggregate sampling and batching, testing aggregate properties, mixing and compacting the asphalt mixture, and finally testing the compacted samples.
Class size is limited to a maximum of six (6) students.

National Binder Technician Certification Program - Lexington, Kentucky.
To become a Certified Binder Technician, a candidate must have work experience with the testing of asphalt binders for compliance with the PG specification (AASHTO M320).  Candidates must have either 6 months of experience or 60 days working directly under an NBTC certified technician before attempting to achieve certification. NBTC Program attendance requires a completed application form and approval.

If you qualify for certification and would like to request attendance at a certification class you must first complete an NBTC application form.

If you need to re-certify, re-certification is achieved by attending an NBTC certification class and successfully passing the examinations. This continuing education component, which is used by many states as a requirement to renew the license of professional engineers, ensures that the technician is current with the most recent changes in asphalt binder testing procedures and laboratory practices. Please complete the NBTC application form to begin the process.

Once you have been approved as an NBTC candidate you will be notified via email. You may then register by contacting Jennifer Hopewell at (859) 288-4967.

The classes below satisfy both new certification and re-certification requirements.
