Asphalt Training – Idaho

Idaho Superpave Asphalt Mix Design Qualification Training

The construction and maintenance of a long lasting asphalt pavement begins in its design phase. Both the thickness and mix designs have a direct effect on a pavement’s ultimate performance.

To address the needs of designing an asphalt mixture that will maximize its opportunity to provide the longest life possible, industry experts Tim Murphy, P.E., Murphy Pavement Technology, and Dave Johnson, P.E., Asphalt Institute Senior Regional Engineer, bring their combined 60+ years of experience in this arena to Boise Idaho with an asphalt mix design certification course specifically tailored to the needs of the Idaho asphalt community. Successfully passing of the certification test meets the training component requirement for mix design technicians and engineers in the state of Idaho as established by the Idaho Transportation Department. Students will receive training over the entire range of activities related to the design of asphalt mixtures: aggregate and binder selection, material properties, development of trial blends, batching, volumetric calculations and analysis, Superpave mix criteria, mix performance tests and criteria emphasizing Idaho requirements, use of RAP in asphalt mix designs, plus an overview of SMA mixtures.

Attendees will receive beverages, snacks, and catered lunches each day of instruction as well as one copy each of the Asphalt Institute’s MS-2, Asphalt Mix Design Methods and handouts of all the presentations. Certification for those passing the certification exam will be made by Murphy Pavement Technology and signed by both instructors as well as an Idaho Transportation Department official.

Who Should Attend:

This course has been developed to meet the needs of those actively involved in mixture design, material specifications and field management of asphalt mixtures in Idaho. State and local transportation agencies, consultants and contractors who are involved in HMA materials and mix design will benefit from this course.

Professional Development Hours:

  • 4 day mix design course, 25.5 PDHs

Idaho Asphalt Workmanship Training

While the construction of high quality, long-lasting asphalt pavements begins with their design, the details of good construction workmanship cannot be over emphasized. Industry experts Tim Murphy, P.E., Murphy Pavement Technology, and Dave Johnson, P.E., Asphalt Institute Senior Regional Engineer, bring their combined 60+ years of experience in this arena to Boise Idaho with an Idaho Asphalt Workmanship Training.

In this workshop, you will learn the basics of each of the important steps in the process. These steps include selection of the right component materials, how best to combine the materials in the mix design, how asphalt mixture is produced and hauled to the project, best practices for preparing the underlying layer for paving and the placement/laydown and compaction principles and best practices of asphalt mixtures. They will also discuss the important quality assurance process during each of the critical phases of construction in order to make sure quality is achieved.

Attendees will receive beverages, snacks, and catered lunches for the day of instruction as well as one copy each of the just updated in 2020 Asphalt Institute’s MS-22, Construction of Quality Asphalt Pavements and handouts of all the presentations.

Who Should Attend:

The workshop is designed for engineers, inspectors, technicians and contractor personnel responsible for quality control of paving materials, mix design procedures, the inspection and operations of asphalt plants and paving operations. Participation should include personnel from federal, state, county and local agencies, airport authorities, paving contractors, consulting engineers and testing laboratories.
